Yay, finally replaced the wonky mechanical thermostat. It was kind of annoying to need to constantly adjust it higher and higher just to keep the air conditioning from freezing my ass off. Brutally simple design in the old one, maybe too simple. Also replaced the thermocouple in the furnace before bringing it online, as opposed to letting it go until it completely fails in the deepest, coldest part of winter. Which has happened before and it sucks. Those things last only about a year or so before they fizzle out. So that's exactly what I did, and I go to bring the furnace online for the winter, I get the pilot light lit but as soon as I let go of the knob, it all goes out. WHAT. Repeat, same thing. AHHHH NOT GOOD. So after several hours of monkeying around with the beast, I'm really tired and I want to sleep and I'm about to give up and call a pro in the morning and I get the crazy idea "what if I put the old thermocouple back in". So I do that and everything works and fires up the first try and I get heat. Again: WHAT. I guess it just didn't like that particular thermocouple.

All these new anime coming out this season. Not hurting for hard drive space; I have about 700GB open and I'm doing some general clearing out of stuff that I've long since bought on DVD anyway. Failing that, I've still got a couple slots left in my 8-bay box. Heh, four years on and the thing's still going, although some of the fans are starting to crap out. I may add a SATA bridgeboard or two to that if the price difference in drives justifies it which at the rate things are going could be really soon.

I have installed WordPress on my site (but not as top-level) and when I get some of the kinks worked out and figure out what I'm doing, I'll take the plastic sheeting off the new addition to the site. I had thought about going with a content management script but I tried a couple of them and either the learning curve was too steep or my brain was taking a walk through the forest or what, but they didn't work out. So WordPress it is. It's not replacing the index page of my site because I want to retain a plain-html path for some of the basic parts. For that matter, I still always have the option of just saying "screw this" and using something else instead.

There are several reasons for this. For starters, I'd like something where I can toss really long posts that would otherwise warrant an instant tl;dr here on LJ. Thoughts and ideas and thinly veiled rants that would fare better in their own showcase rather than the eternally shifting ether of LJ, where a post made one day is deeply buried under the posts of the next. A place for my truly epic threads. Secondly, I would like something that would function a bit more cohesively in regards to my convention reports and anime reviews and offer the chance for feedback and comments. Lastly, I have a slowly diminishing faith in SixApart's ability to maintain LJ in an impartial manner and should LJ and I choose different paths in regards to what is acceptable and what isn't, well there's that Plan B we all hear tell about.

Don't get me wrong, I fully plan on continuing to use LJ for sharing snippets of life and insights and checking in with everyone. But a backup plan should be in everyone's plan.

Also since the latest version of Shimmie (based on Danbooru but with fewer dependencies) is leaps and bounds ahead of what I'm using for my meido gallery, which is still stuck in prototyping hell, I'm looking to upgrade that but it also means asking my webhost to upgrade PHP on their end as well (something I expect they'll do with a "yes sir right away sir" or at least they should) and is merely a detail rather than a problem. What I do consider a problem is that they have something of a "no naughty bits" policy. While I often get around it with direct-linked one-shot images, I think a full-blown gallery full of pictures of maids in varying states of dress, undress, and distress would quickly raise some ire and I would find myself being swatted about with a rolled-up TOS. If it weren't for that I wouldn't be in the market for a new webhost. (Dreamhost is currently at the top of my list of considerations.) As it is, no hurry.
Whooosh!
Oh yeah and I went to Zenkaikon 2 this past weekend. My thoughts. Pictures to come soon.
