Dec. 18th, 2007 04:09 amSo after a bunch of hours, a decent nap or three, some plugging in and installing, reloading XP and the obligatory 50 restarts, I think I have some semblance of a Windows system again even if it is still finding updates and whatnot. It's already running better than the previous incarnation, most likely because I kept out some of the shovelware that often comes bundled with new systems.
A couple months ago I made what I call a doomsday disc, which has all the sorts of things that I would need if I were to do a reinstall, standalone installers for things like Firefox, AVG, AdAware, so that I'm not suddenly going out onto the internet completely naked looking for things like that. That and I kept all of my other install discs in one place, keeping them all in a red cloth bag. The time had come, and the doomsday disc did its magic and saved me much searching.
32-bit XP-Pro SP2 running on:
Asus P5K-E motherboard with built-in wifi
Intel E6750 Core 2 Duo 2.66GHz
2gb (1gb x2) PC8500 RAM
Asus 8500GT 512MB PCI-E video card
200GB IDE hard drive
500GB SATA hard drives x3 (2 of them in a RAID0)
16x IDE DVD burner
16x SATA DVD burner
BFG 650W power supply & APC UPS
standard floppy drive
optical mouse
blue-LED case fans, for that extra touch of bling
The list of things that originally came with the PC that are still in use is steadily shrinking. The case, keyboard, monitor, and XP install disc, and I'm beginning to think of getting a bigger case. There's also a USB keyboard on standby, bought several years ago when my older PB's keyboard was going nuts. Everything else has been replaced, upgraded or outright added. Anyone need some AGP video cards?
Powerbook battery still dying. It might last until sometime in February. Maybe I could rig up something with the spent powertool batteries in the collection boxes at work. That would be cool.
Meanwhile I watched the last episode of HiguKai and it was AWESOME and now my throat is all itchy. I can't think of what in hell would be in the 3rd series that was recently announced, but I bet that's going to be awesome as well, even if the characters croak more times than a lake full of frogs.
Didn't get much of the BIG SNOWSTORM that recently happened. Just some sleet and ice that largely disappeared the next day.
Wordy post is wordy.
