After dropping easily over a grand on parts for [livejournal.com profile] yamikochan in the past few months, I decided that buying something for myself was in order. So now I have a 160GB iPod Classic. I also have a device to go between the iPod and Yamiko's radio so it can be controlled from there. I also have it set up so that I can plug it into either my Powerbook or my PC and it won't reformat itself.

I did a lot with/to her recently, a veritable shopping list of all kinds of tasks that occupied more than a couple weekends. Much of this was expected and started on months ago; the only surprise was the air conditioning incident. To summarize: New brake pads and rotors on the front and rear, new brake fluid, new oxygen sensors (needed only the special socket, a huge-ass wrench, a million pounds of torque, and 1 part PB Blaster mixed with 9001 parts elbow grease to make for an otherwise anti-climactic effort), got the air conditioning running again, new serpentine belt (twice; ask if you want), mostly cleaned and vacuumed the interior, cleaned most of the haze off the windows, installed ipod adapter for radio, replaced headlights and turn signals and taillights and other assorted exterior bulbs, replaced a couple interior bulbs, new battery, tires rotated, new air filter, and partially refitted the bumper cover.

I have yet to tally up the cost of parts and supplies for all that. The brakes and O2 sensors took up the vast majority of the cost. Labor for all this cost me a whopping $0. DIY FTW. I'm only able to remember all of that because I literally had a word file that I started several months ago to help me keep track of it all.

Computer stuffs: Need to get some more hard drives to replace a couple of my older ones that are starting to really crap out. One of them I had moved everything over to a new one last year then wiped clean, ran a diskcheck, reformatted, then loaded it with a bunch of things for [livejournal.com profile] vampyre_miyu and now it won't work. The good news is that there's nothing on there I can't reproduce. Another one is approaching its last stretch because it ate a bunch of Under17 songs. The files are still there, but they read 0k in size. ATE the Under17 of all things, damn hard drive. Wait, I remember! I copied the files onto another drive about a month or so ago! Nope, those read 0k as well. Damn. As you can guess I am highly displeased about this. However I still have a few tricks up my sleeve so things are still under control.

It's only 3AM and I'm already tired.

So how do you set up the iPod so that it doesn't reformat itself when you plug it into any computer?

Hey, anytime you want to trek on up to Shamokin-land, a closet full of computer parts is at your service. All PC stuff, but hey.

Tell it to not automatically sync itself. I also have XP set up to be able to read Mac-formatted drives.

Computer parts pickup will likely have to wait until sometime mid-July, if that's ok.

no problem on that. I don't think the house will be cleared out by then....I might be able to haul it to mom's and you can pick it up there, if I play my cards right. But no guarantee on that.
