May. 23rd, 2009 03:03 amFive large anime cons going on this weekend and yet I feel perfectly content with scooting down to Balticon for just today. I dunno. It's odd, because my work schedule effectively gives me a 3-day weekend every other weekend, and I get extra vacation time now, but I feel like I have other uses for my weekends, other places to go, other things to see and do. Even if it means sitting at home and watching anime, translated or not.
There's a certain charm to watching anime untranslated. It reminds me of the days of fuzzy VHS fansubs when everything was harder to get a hold of. It didn't matter if it was inherently good anime or not, we watched it because getting it meant we had to walk 150 miles in the snow (uphill both ways) while fighting ninjas and solving ancient cryptic puzzles and wrestling with the Minotaur before we could even get our grubby little paws on a tape that may or may not be playable. Ok, maybe not quite that much of an adventure, but close.
Come to think of it, watching anime while having some beer and a large pizza sounds like a great idea for any weekend.
