To be sure, I would also be a rude, superstitious, narrow-minded grouch had I lived in the 18th Century, if only for the sake of blending in with everyone else. That quote is appropriately one of the first things on the screen of the movie "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". I get my zen where I can.
I think the beast part comes not from acting like a complete animal (though it would apply), but from spurning the generally accepted responsibilities of being a man in a social sense. Compared to someone who went through the effort to get married, have children, and spends all their time providing for the sake of their family, I really could be considered a beast. I'm fine with that. It's all according to plan, whatever plan that may be.
