Forward! to Ohayocon!
Jan. 22nd, 2004 08:43 pmAs the subject says, I'm going to Ohayocon. And of course, most of the planning that I do before a convention usually flies out the window. But, some of the more important objectives have been attained, namely making sure that I have enough hours in for the week at work. That's all that's needed as far as work goes. The funny part is, I'm snarky enough to say "I'm taking off whether anyone likes it or not!" and yet the place is laid back enough that they don't mind if I'm off for a day or two.
I have learned there is a big difference between asking for time off and saying you're going to be off. Asking makes it sound like your boss or manager actually has a say in the matter, and it also makes it sound like your reason for impending absence is trivial at best. The ball's in their court, and you don't want it there. On the other hand, saying up front ahead of time "I won't be able to come into work on (whatever day)." has more weight to it. More... resolve. You know you're not coming in, and you're letting the powers that be know, so it's much less of a surprise. They appreciate knowing that sort of thing ahead of time, they really do. What I did at my old job was simply fill out the vacation form, hand it to my boss directly, and say that they might as well approve it, because I just wasn't gonna be there that day.
And then there's anime. Maburaho is something that grew on me whether I planned it to or not. Originally the cast struck me as so obnoxious that I watched the first couple episodes hoping that someone would drop a tanker truck full of gasoline on them. Unfortunately, that sort of thing only happens in real life, and to those that warrant such actions the least. But anyway, the characters either mellowed, or something, they just didn't get on my nerves as much. (On the other hand, there is Love Hina... Where's the Overfiend when he's needed the most?)
Ah well.
