psipsy: (don pachi!)
So today I went to Zenkaikon 3 anyway, as I was feeling up to it after all. On the way there, I stopped at the nearby MicroCenter for that new memory that I was jonesing for. Then I get to the convention and I see A LOT more people than I saw last year. Then I see signs saying that registration was closed. Determined, I went in anyway, and since there were people leaving for the day (parents taking their kids home), they were able to squeeze me in. I mean, it would have kinda sucked to have gone all the way out there just to get turned away, never mind that another primary mission was accomplished and I could have been back home in 2 hours anyway. Such as it were, since AUSA was a week before and relatively close, I was worried that they'd have trouble with attendance. Far from it, much to my relief.

Twenty bucks for admission bought me 9 hours of anime convention jollies. I would have to say Zenkaikon is a contender to look out for on the convention scene. They have potential, and they seem to know this, they just need to refine it and expand to fill out the full weekend, even if starting out small is likely what contributed to their early survival. And in giving kudos to the con chair and subsequent conversing about convention experience, I may have gotten myself on staff for that as well. I don't know. I won't mind giving them pointers and advice and generally helping them improve, but I don't know about working at two conventions a year. My attention span barely accommodates working for one.

Oh yes, and unlike the year before, there was someone at the con that knew me this time. But I'm still quite the stranger in a strange land, however close to home it may be. It's not as frustrating as one would think, and instead the forced anonymity makes for quite the novelty.

Mostly unrelated: Check out the manga "Vinland Saga" if you can, through this method if you must. Pirates and ninjas be damned, Vikings will stomp BOTH of their asses.
