After getting another battery for my camcorder, I went through some of the unlabeled mystery tapes. As it turns out, about half of the unlabeled tapes were still blank. Of the remainder that had something on them, most of those had about a minute or two of footage and then nothing, making them effectively blank. I can get new batteries, can I still get Hi8 tapes? Outside of Amazon or ebay, not easily. There seems to be a wave of "found footage" lore that uses 90s camcorders, or something that can replicate their effect.

Funny about that. The 90s were 25 to 35 years ago, so there's a whole generation of young adults who were either born after the 90s ended, or were too young to remember it. I could say the same about myself and the 70s. I know I was born in the 70s, I have a few memories dating back to that time, but it didn't register in my mind "hey this is the 70s". I digress. Thing is, here's a whole generation of people who weren't really there for the 90s, so it's a mystery to them. It can be described in detail by people old enough to remember the 90s very well, and the media documenting what happened is more comprehensive and much better preserved than from just a decade prior, but that only makes it more mysterious. There are a lot of facts and clues to work with, and it makes the remaining holes all the more obvious. Plus it being prior to the turn of the century just adds to the mystique. Those holes are opportunity for someone wanting to create urban legends and works of fiction, and I'm honestly curious as to what will get produced.

I have 7 or 8 film cameras now. What the hell. I learned Kodak is currently making a camera that uses 35mm film, but uses half a frame at a time, so a full roll can provide up to 72 pictures. Interesting concept.

Lately, I've been clearing out more excess vegetation from my yard. It never ceases to amaze me at how FAST that shit grows. I'll look once and there's nothing, and then I look again and there's a massive cluster of weeds taller than me. If I leave it alone, it'll eat my house. Manual shears and lopes for the light and leafy stuff. For thick and woody, and dead tree branches, the HackZall and a 12" pruning blade makes quick work of it. Also, I have calculated that the grass grows at a rate of 2" (5cm) per week during May. It mercifully slows down later in the summer, when the weather shifts from "warm and juicy" to "hot and dry".

Something else I learned about my yard is to not walk out in it at night unless I have to, and to check my shoes before going back inside if I do. I went on some errands one evening, including getting some gas for the mower, finally getting home after dark. Well, I wasn't going to leave that in my car overnight, so as soon as I got home, I took the gas can right to the shed and walked back through the tall wet grass in the yard, went inside, and as I took off my shoes, I saw about a dozen slugs had hitched a ride on them. At least I had the presence of mind to look.
