Merry Christmas!
Dec. 25th, 2002 05:02 amI can't remember ever seeing this much snow on Christmas. Gift #1.
It's nice, really. And I don't have to drive to work in it either.
I think my Christmas is turning out better than I thought it would. There's a big present that I already got about a week and a half ago. Had some very unpleasant wrapping to it, but once I got past that... Gift #2.
Perhaps I saved all of my holiday cheer for the here and now? For the past month or so, I've been looking at the holiday season going between mild senses of dread and apathy, as though it had become a chore to go through so we don't make ourselves look bad. As I was finishing up my Christmas shopping the other night, I knew what I was looking for, and knew where to find it. But I passed other holiday shoppers and noticed they were not enjoying it at all. They would wait in line at the checkout registers, eyes closed, covering their ears from the holiday noise, or burying their faces entirely. I can't help but wonder what would cause that kind of frustration... Perhaps it really has become that much of a chore. Even before Thanksgiving, we're deluged with "YOU MUST CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS OR YOU SUCK". And after Thanksgiving, it just gets worse. Can we please be left to celebrate it at our own pace? We're not going to forget about it if we're not inundated with the audio/visual extravaganza. It's not that I don't like Christmas, I just don't like it cheapened.
Christmas Eve was fun, said goodbye to my sister and her husband before they started on their journey home, then hung out with Eric, weirding out his girlfriend occasionally in the process. Then the snowing started. And I think today is what really helped lift my holiday mood.
I've been up entirely too long, at this rate I'll completely miss the rest of the morning.
