So far it looks like my appearance at AWA isn't going to happen this year after all. I've been going to that since '97 and every other year since '99, so it looks like for 2004, AWA will have one less Bob than usual. But there is AUSA, because that one is much closer and all of the major expenses are covered by me being on staff. There's also Neko-con, which I'm still ambivalent about, but I suppose that could happen. But no guarantees on that one either.

It gets dark entirely too soon. But, that's to be expected this time of year.

One of my knees has been acting up again lately. Maybe because of the weather, maybe because it's about to do something again, not unlike earthquakes that occur right before a volcanic eruption.

Meanwhile, I tuned up ye olde website a bit, giving some bits a once-over and adding a links page (which is still obviously incomplete). If any of you can think of some anime/manga/jpop/fandom related links that could be added, by all means throw me a URL, and once it passes evaluation, I shall add it. Unfortunately it doesn't mean any new convention reports. Eventually, yes!

Anime time!

Azusa will help!: In the future, a lack of baseball players has led to the acceptance of "sports robots." A down-on-hard-times high school baseball team with a non-stop losing streak is about to be disbanded because one of the members quit. So they look into getting a sports robot to fill in the gap, but all they can afford is a used maid robot, Azusa, who doesn't know anything about baseball, but is eager to learn. Will her battery hold a charge long enough to play a full game of baseball? I've never been a fan of sports anime or sports in general, but I found this sweet little one-shot quite charming and entertaining, even heartwarming towards the end. Granted, it has a lot of stereotype elements in it, such as the grandfather/coach that doesn't like robots, and the bottom of the barrel status of the team itself, but it made for a fun 50 PG-rated minutes. I wouldn't mind this becoming a regular series.

2x2 Shinobuden: Ninjas! Ninjas are (almost) always cool. Shinobu, a young ninja-in-training, has to complete a task as part of her training. The least impossible option is to go around and steal underwear for her master, so the first episode is some silly mild ecchi-ness. Especially the part where she sneaks into Kaede's room, and tries an invisibility move which she thinks is working, when it's not. I'm going for more of this.

Magister Negi Magi promo/introduction: From the creator of Love Hina comes more harem anime! This time the central male character is a 10 year old English teacher at an all-girls middle school. So we're talking about no-question-about-it jailbait AND child abuse now? It's an unlikely case, as the base premise is different: Instead of a college age loser in a house full of girls that clobber him relentlessly for reasons both real and imagined, Magister NM is about a kid who's an actual teacher, and the vast majority of his pupils think he's the cat's meow. Putting that in perspective, probably (hopefully) the only things it'll have in common with Love Hina is the original author, and Yui Horie will invariably supply the voice to a character. I think watching an actual episode or two will give a better indication. Or I could get the manga. Or I could bum it from someone that already bought it. Or I could snoop for an opened copy while camping out at Borders one fine evening. One would think that with all the time I'm in there, I would have read 15 tons of manga. But anyway! Opinion: Inconclusive.

The Kotoko mega-pack finished sooner than I thought it would, and even though I already had a large portion of what was in there, there was more that I didn't have than I thought.

Recently, there was a new ParaPara cd of remixes of various anime songs, and just like the others, sung by Yoko Ishida. Some of the selections didn't initially strike me as ParaPara-able material, but somehow she pulled those off well. The version of "Coppelia no Hitsugi" manages to keep it's dark elements surprisingly well. For something completely different, this one also threw me for a loop: Tenbatsu! Yes, somehow that song was put through the ParaPara treatment. Go figure. There's another one I posted in the [livejournal.com profile] ive_sound community.

I shall drive to Roanoke this weekend! On second thought, no. Regardless, I have a crazy itch for a road trip, and the highly probable lack of AWA for me this year means I'll have to find another way to scratch it, and I'm not picky about whether it's with Yamiko-chan or Ai-chan.

Since this evening's bunch of torrents are mostly done (except for the Komugi Z raw file, thanks to Hongfire for supplying fantastic and rare stuff on a craptacular tracker) I guess I shall take that as a cue to go on home soon.
