PC update: Memtest86 is telling me that all of my memory is bad, including the stick that wasn't installed when the computer started going wonky. Suspicious indeed. For the hell of it, I called up CompUsa to see if they could test individual memory and judging by their response I may as well have asked them to butcher a roadkill deer. It was a response that I had fully expected.

There is a computer show coming up this weekend, I might take my memory there and see if someone there can check it out. If the sticks check out ok, then it's either the mobo or processor, and Socket 478 stuff isn't as prevalent in the retail market as it was the 2 1/2 years ago that I bought this machine, which I dare say was edging towards being obsolete back then and I might as well build a new system. Then again, if I can find suitable parts in a closeout sale, I'd be able to salvage most of what I got instead. Maybe I'll find a battery for my powerbook. Mostly musing aloud here, as I have some solid ideas in place, but suggestions are welcome.

This week has been going slow for me. It felt like Friday should have come two days ago.

Aaaand one more week until the last episode of Higurashi. Three days if I settle for the raw. That show's been one wild ride from start to finish.

Die-Hardware

I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop with my desktop. So many of my friends have had moderate to serious problems with their hardware, and the only piece that has given me any grief is my "new" laptop, which has been sitting unused since I (groan...GROAN) made the mistake of updating the XP Pro that came with it to Vista. In other words, I have never had a single minute's use of the laptop since I got it months ago and will be paying for it month by month for the next year or so. Eventually, I may end up taking it to the Geek Squad at Best Buy...if I can't get the problem resolved myself...after the first of the year when I'm really, definitely, seriously going to need the laptop for on-the-road purposes.

It's called "Vistake" for a reason. Maybe when the first service pack comes out either this month or next, it'll clear up a lot, but I wouldn't bet on it. Until then, if you managed to get the XP install discs with your laptop, it may be worthwhile to do a fresh re-install.

Then again, when XP came out it earned the nickname Xtra Problems and there were rumors of people getting endlessly frustrated with that to the point of going back to WinME.

IMO, 2000SP4 was the most stable offering. I see machines at work running W2K weeks or months on end with nary a restart.

I like XP and it given me a long life. I want to get a new computer or Laptop, but I am waiting until late next year when Vista works better.

On an unrelated note, Are you going to Ohayocon in three weeks, Bob?

Technically, you can still request XP on a new computer, at least until sometime in June. Or maybe Vista will somewhat have its act together by then.

Gonna pass on Ohayocon tho, wasn't really planning on it.
