Thinking about getting an iPod. Thinking about it. If I get one it might be a Nano, probably a Classic. Creative's Zen with its SD expansion slot is also tempting. As long as it's something that can hold more than 2GB of songs.

Reading up on what's all involved in replacing Yamiko-chan's air conditioning compressor and it looks like fun. It involves removal of the alternator and power steering pump and auto-tensioner pulley among other things. Easy enough?

Through various turns of events, my maidar has guided me to a gem of a manga: LucuLucu. A maid with prehensile hair FTW.

Website thoughts: I have been considering spinning off the meido gallery onto it's own site with a new domain and hosting and everything, completely independent of the cardboardshrine.com site. I have my reasons for this.

I think I might watch all of "Clannad" over the next couple days. Will I ;_;? [Y/N]

me, too

The Classics have more memory (up to 160 GB--as big as my laptop's hard drive!!!), but the Nanos are less money and are nothing to sneeze at, GB-wise.

If you find a 2-for-1 deal, I'll help you out with that....

I'm only considering an iPod because I already have 1) iTunes, which I think is one of the better programs out there, and 2) most of my music in m4a format, which (unfortunately) isn't compatible with any other music player. That's the one thing about Apple that makes me crazy...

I look at it this way: If I get a Nano, it would have to be an 8GB one, and then for $50 more I can get the 80GB Classic.

Why so much of your music in m4a?

Because I throw it into iTunes - and then, to avoid duplicates on the hard drive, I take off the .mp3/.wma files. Anytime I fix the artist/title/album tags, it's in iTunes. So that's where my music is the most tidy and complete.

Right now, my 1st generation iPod Shuffle (512 mb) works just fine. The only thing I kinda miss is being able to see what song is on so that I can remember later if I like it or not.

I'm still a bit unclear

You know me, I use iTunes all the time (it's on 2 comps at home and one at work) but I don't have a zillion m4a files bouncing around my hard drives. Just about all of it is ripped as mp3, which is all my current non-iPod player can handle.

I don't know if it does anything differently on Macs, or if it's a preference I don't have set correctly, but on my computer this is what happens:

1. I click/drag the .mp3 or .wma file into iTunes
2. iTunes converts it to an .m4a file and saves it in C:/Documents & Settings/[my profile name]/My Documents/My Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/[Artist Folder]/[Album Folder]

The original file can be moved or deleted without affecting the iTunes library, because the program makes a copy of the song and stuffs it in the iTunes folder.

In iTunes, under Edit -> Preferences -> "Advanced" tab = there's a window that shows where iTunes stores the music. Even though I have the "copy to iTunes library" unchecked, it still puts a copy in there.

Figure that one out. Heh.

I'm also looking at the preference settings on my XP setup. I also have that unchecked and it behaves for me; I also have "Keep iTunes Music Folder organized" unchecked. Cuz y'know, organization is an alien concept to me.

In "Advanced -> Importing", there's also a setting for choosing mp3 format, unless you have that set and iTunes is still laughing at you.

Aha! You know, that last thingy might just be the ticket I'm looking for.

Do you think it would still let me put stuff on the iPod Shuffle if I chose .mp3?

Yes. That IS one of the supported formats, after all.

A valid point; I'll have to see if there's a price drop by then.

At the same time, I'm more inclined to keep my chicken eggs separate from my duck eggs. If one thing goes, I'd still have something else usable.
