Suddenly I'm in a restaurant in the country of (_________)!

What should I order, and what should I avoid?

Okay...

If you're in the country of the United States of America, you should order roast something and should avoid steak. Of all the restaurant (and banquet, etc.) steaks I've ever eaten, I'd say, at most, 10% of them have actually been reasonably well prepared, properly cooked (medium), and actually edible.

The odds of getting a decent steak seem to improve at an independent steakhouse than a chain. I once watched a co-worker order a steak at Denny's. Yes, that ended as well as you think it did.

Country: Brunei
Order: Ambuyat
Avoid: Sambal Belacan (though strictly speaking it's more Malaysian...)

I take it you're not a fan of hot/spicy foods?

I can take them but I'm not fond of them.

Makes sense. Some zing is good but I'm starting to outgrow foods that are outrageously hot for the sake of being hot.

When in...

Korea

Order thuk-pok-kee (cheap, hot rice cakes - yummy!)

Avoid kaey-kho-gee (hot dogs; i.e. cooked bow-wow - not joking)

Ah, so that's what it's called. Someone I used to work with told me that's what dog was on the menu but it was years ago and I was trying to remember what it was, thanks.

Order the Green Eggs and Ham. Avoid the Red Fish and the Blue Fish.

In Ireland, I can't say that I had any "bad" foods, but the texture of the mashed-carrots-and-parsnips wasn't great.

In the UK, the best places to get fish and chips are run by the Vietnamese.

In Ocean City, MD, good sushi is found at what used to be Charlie Chang's.

Also in Ocean City, squeaky mallets can be had at the various beach supply shops.

Inflatable things are hilarious, as are squeaky things....

Oh, and do NOT eat salami/sausage products in a foreign country -- or be really careful if you do. They treat the outside of the casing with Penicillium (!) sometimes.

(as seen on the Wikipedia entry for Salami.)

Just so you know....
