Went with the 64-bit version, because I can.

The installation screen has a very smooth and purdy interface to it, as opposed to XP and 2000's no-nonsense, all-biznatch, let's-get-down-to-brass-tacks raw text. As I've mentioned before, I'm not so adventurous as to overwrite my XP install. Not only is it going onto a fresh hard drive, it's also going onto an external one hooked up via eSata. That way I can switch it off entirely if I don't feel like messing with it.

Memory usage? For comparison, 32-bit XP uses about 350-400MB after startup, and that's with everything installed and in place after 18 months. 64-bit W7 however, gobbles up as much as a full GB. This is somewhat expected, and if I went with the 32-bit version it would presumably be less. My system already has 2GB, and can go up to 8GB if need be.

There's already graphics drivers available; so that's off to a good start. Installed the Combined Community Codec Pack, which was written more for Vista than W7, but it went through anyway. So far the only glitch I found was Media Player Classic would ignore subtitles in .mkv files; however the Zoom Player didn't have such an issue.

That's all for now; I plan on taking another look under the hood later on.

Just a reminder if you haven't seen already, the newest OSX point revision is out. I can't remember if you're on Leopard or not, but earlier versions may also have security updates, etc. to pull at the same time.

Still on Tiger on the G4, which is probably as far as it'll go. It's set up for automatic notification as it is.

As much as I do not like Windows, I have been hearing nothing but praise about W7.

Was half thinking about installing it on my media pc. I have mythbuntu on there now. Even though I LOVE Linux, I do not think media is its strong point.

Would it be possible to move partitions around? If not, put it on its own drive like I did. Either way you'd have to contend with W7 taking over the bootloader.

I also have Ubuntu and VLC mostly works for it. Still so much to learn about it.

I supposed I could partition the drive. Only problem is getting around to it.

I use Vmware player in Ubuntu to run MS Exel 2007. Needed it for a class I was taking >.<
It seems there is always something new to learn when it comes to Linux.

Had any experience with Wine for an emulator?

I do. I use it with a couple of programs, but I could not get it to work with Excel. -.-

Boy, am I out of the loop....I didn't even know Windows had come out with a new OS.

I'll just stick with XP, kthx. I think it's JUST FINE despite its quirks.

Officially it's not quite ready for primetime. I'll probably keep XP as well for the forseeable future.
