Sep. 3rd, 2010 04:15 amFive day weekend is upon me. Unless I get called on to go to work to finish up something, in which case that's ok too because of overtime pay. My plans? As the weekend's size was largely the result of scheduling sneakiness (in a good way), I'll probably be using it to clean up around here. Maybe a day or two of mini-trips as a sanity break.
Home server plan is moving forward, as if I didn't have anything else to do. I ended up getting more parts than expected, but still within reason. Rather than reuse my old P4, I went and got a Socket 775-based motherboard and processor. This will give me plenty of room to grow as I need it, and enough power to press it into desktop service if I need that too. I've already got a bucket of spare hard drives, some of which are actually usable.
For the OS, I'm putzing around with variations of Ubuntu, the more novice-friendly flavor of Linux. I've tried it before, and it was alright. It's amazing at how many diagnostic tools come with it; I've been using it to sift through my hard drives and find any that may or may not be useful. Although, thanks to
matarick, I've got another Windows 7 key to use for this. Except using that means the server will need a memory upgrade before I get this thing online. At least DDR2 memory is fairly cheap.
Since the major players here have gigabit ethernet, I'll need to pick up a router capable of that at some point. Or when my current router permanently flakes out. WAIT A MINUTE. This isn't being as cheap as I thought it would be. Oh well.
Trying to watch some "Amagami SS". I dunno, it's not a bad show I guess, but it's just not doing it for me. Maybe if it had a few other things in it. Like, Astro Fighter Sunred, Mojo Nixon, and the rapping dog from "Titanic: The Animated Movie". And maybe some billhook.
