A couple weeks ago I went to an anime club at UMBC. Twice a year they have a 24-hour marathon, and they manage to get a nice lecture hall for it, complete with projector. Naturally I didn't stay for the whole thing, nor did I plan to otherwise I would have brought a sleeping bag and pillow (I am not designed to stay awake that long).

Anyway.

They show anime in 1 or 2-hour blocks, and about half is viewer choice. It's fair and democratic, but one problem is they'll also show stuff from the middle of a series. If I haven't seen it before, that doesn't do me any good, unless I use that time to get some sleep, which is what a lot of people do when they don't want to leave but they don't feel a need to watch what's being shown. The upside is that it's a good way to discover new anime that may have slipped my radar. In this case, Carnival Phantasm.

Anyway.

Here's an idea I have for anime marathons. Instead of random blocks of random anime, show an entire show AT ONCE. There are plenty of 12-26 episode series that someone could steam through in a day. Naturally there would be some rules of conduct and operation, such as breaks between episodes for basic comforts and needs, and an attempt to control external distractions, something I failed to do at best or was guilty of at worst when I was running an anime club back in the day.

Anyway.

Doing a marathon of an entire show has some logistical drawbacks. For example, a 26-episode series would require about 13 hours from start to finish (12 if I hustle), a significant chunk of time. If the weather is bad and I don't have to go anywhere, that's no problem. If it's nice outside and/or I have things to do, it gets difficult. Oh, but there are charms too. An advantage is that by going from one episode to another to another, it's all still fresh in my mind. The story has a chance to gel in my head and stick in my memory better. It's especially apparent when watching a show that gets significantly better as it goes on. There's also a sense of accomplishment, like when I watched all of the first season of Mahoromatic at Animazement '02 in a video room from 12am to 5am.

Anyway.

You might be wondering, "But don't you have ADD/ADHD and the attention span of a goldfish? Wouldn't you be distracted by something else by the time the opening credits are done?" That is a very real possibility, one that I've already accounted for. First of all, I'd shut off my cellphone and laptop and put that away. Next, I'd have all my food and soda and munchies on hand. Third, I'd have a nonstop playlist (except with the ability to pause). Lastly, us ADD folks have the ability to switch on Hyperfocus, where we can mentally blot out everything but what we're working on. If I'm really into something, my living room could be overrun by flying zombie velociraptors and I wouldn't notice.

Anyway.

So I'm in the process of harvesting. Right now, I'm leeching as much of Fate/Stay Night as I can, and when Fate/Zero finishes airing, I'll throw that on the pile too. But I have a Crunchyroll account now, so I guess that means Fate/Zero is already taken care of. As well as a lot of other shows that now I can just stream instead of wasting hard drive space on something I might watch only once. And they air it within an hour it airs in Japan.

Anyway.

Flying zombie velociraptors. In your living room. Ponder on that.

Play back the anime with VLC, but crank the playback speed up 30%!

That would be useful for things like Naruto/One Piece/Bleach/DBZ/Detective Conan/other shows that have been running forever, where a marathon would start to resemble a prison sentence.
