So far the Ipod repairs have been a mixed bag of results.

The Ipod Touch got a new screen and battery, however I suspect the wifi antenna may have gotten damaged in the process. It can still connect to the wifi, the antenna still has continuity, but the range isn't there anymore. I hear that happens often when replacing the screen on those so I'll probably order a new antenna anyway.

The Ipod Nano did not fare as well. Originally that just needed a new battery, but in taking it apart, the display got ruined. Well, I guess if I'm going to order more Ipod parts, might as well get a display for this. Not like I paid anything for this Ipod in the first place.

The Ipod Classic got a new battery; it still needs the iflash adapter to go forward with the 1TB project.

With the Touch and Nano, those are taken apart by heating up the display so the glue weakens enough that it can be pulled apart. Much like with my previous phone, so it's not just an Apple thing. It's fine when the intention is to replace the display itself, and no care needs to be taken to preserve the original. It's very tricky when trying to reuse the display, apparently.

The Ipod Classics are disassembled by way of prying on all edges of the metal case. The edges are usually bent outwards afterward, and at that point the case is either replaced, or the end user decides to live with an Ipod that's all banged up and dented.

All this because consumers fed into the idea that smaller and sleeker somehow meant better. If someone made a portable music player using standard storage components (either m.2 or microSD) and featured removable batteries (the 18650 form factor would do well) and was held together by normal screws but was a bit on the bulky side, I'd go wild for that.

In the meantime, I'm using a somewhat newer Ipod Classic (2014) for portable music.

Maybe you could 3D print a shell to hold all the parts together?
