At work, I hear tell that I'll be able to carry over up to 80 hours instead of 40 into next year. That's probably not going to happen for me this year but eventually I think I can get it up to the full 80, which means starting off the year with up to 7 weeks vacation. Even half of that would make for a glorious road trip. (I'd probably have to arrange for a house-sitter.) Ultimately, going on incredible multi-week road trips has always been A Thing for me that's proved elusive (mostly my fault). The combination of the extra carry-over and getting a 5th week puts such an event that much, MUCH closer to reality. But for 2022, I'll probably stick with dipping my toes into 2 week road trips, up from 1.

For road trips, I learned how to do a lot with 1 week. However, I learned that it's not quite enough for driving across the country and back, especially when the intention includes making regular stops to see things. If I ever want to drive to Alaska, that will require 3 weeks.

Ai is leaking power steering fluid. I'm not angry, or surprised. I knew there was a slow leak, and I anticipated fixing that by buying a replacement part well over a year ago. I guess now is the time because the one leak turned into a bunch and they all got more aggressive. Most of the bolts involved came out easily enough, then again having power steering fluid ooze into their threads was a help. I spilled less of the fluid than expected, and what did dribble out landed in a large catch pan. Most of it. For what goes on the floor, I have gray spill pads designed for that sort of thing. In the meantime, I have more parts on order.

A couple weeks ago I went to a model train show for a few hours. On top of finding obscure model railroad stuff, I also found a camera kit. An early 80s Minolta SLR with 4 lenses, 2 flashes, and a fancy camera strap and bag, for a whopping $40. Even though I have a Canon ecosystem, I bought it. The seller said he favored Nikon. (He must have inherited it.) Overall, the camera looks okay, if a bit rougher than the Canon SLR I picked up while in Japan. Likewise with the lenses. That said, I also got a lens adapter so I could use the Minolta lenses on my T3i, for (non-destructive) experiments.

Old used cameras in particular have their own allure, their own mysteries. Where has this camera been? What stories could it tell? What pictures did it take? What memories are associated with those pictures? What became of the people on either side of the shutter? A working camera additionally asks: What kind of pictures can be taken next?
