Sep. 9th, 2022 07:25 amRecent anime haul from the 2nd-hand stores:
-Jormungand. Supposedly set in the same universe as Black Lagoon so it's guaranteed to be violent.
-Rumbling Hearts. Love-triangle anime from 20 years ago. Got this as the opportunity presented.
-Saber Marionette J-Again. The missing piece of my Saber Marionette DVD collection. I already have this somewhere on VHS. Somewhere. But here, a working DVD player is easier to find than a working VCR.
-Figma of Ayase from Oreimo. Pure opportunity. Not that I needed this one specifically, but the price was good, and it was there. If you don't know what Figmas are, they're action figures of anime and game characters.
I keep learning new tricks about my T3i that I've had since 2011. For one thing, it can control the external flash wirelessly. Yeah, I can just stick it on the top like I always have, but I can also have it sit a few feet away and it'll flash at the same time as the camera's built-in flash.
Another new trick is I can use a wired remote for the shutter, which can also work as an intervalometer. For that matter, the wired remote connection is incredibly simple; it's just a matter of grounding a pair of contacts. I could build a device that would work off an external sensor and tell the camera to take pictures when that sensor's conditions are met.
There are a lot of things on the DSLR that can't be done on a phone. I think what the phone has going for it is convenience and the ability to post pictures online immediately. At the same time, there's no real substitute for using big glass to funnel light onto a big sensor, being able to control the aperture, shutter, exposure, focus, and so on. Some of these lenses even have their own stabilization to mitigate shaking.
I miss the camera stores of Tokyo. They were more like cramped and compact museums. The tight walkways, the shelves packed with artifacts, being surrounded by devices whose sole purpose was to capture memories in the form of images or to assist in that endeavor. That's the appeal. Not many places like that here in the US, if any.
Other news: Got another booster shot. That makes a total of 4. I'll take another 4 if I need to. As usual, the only side effect was a sore shoulder, which is to be expected after getting jabbed with a needle.
