It wasn't very long ago that the idea of staying in the house for 3 or 4 days at a time would have driven me nuts. Now, it's not so bad. It might have a lot to do with how I have more things at home to entertain me. Maybe I'm also getting to the "if I don't have to be somewhere, I'm not going" stage. Nah, I just get like this each winter.

I got some 18650 batteries from yonder Microcenter. But they're more like 18690 batteries, because they don't fit where an 18650 should. I peeled off the outer wrap and found some kind of circuit added on at the end, complete with solder tabs. Oh hey, I could use these for another project.

About 20 years ago, I got some tiny R/C cars called Bit-CharG. The tiny internal battery is charged via the controller and not typically removed. I thought the car's battery was going to be ultra-rare and impossible to find but no, the 1/3AAA is also used in solar lighting devices, and I can get a pack of 4 locally. Unless something about them makes them not fit right. Could happen. I replaced those batteries before. I forgot how fragile the wiring was.

Almost as long ago, I bought a radio-controlled car from Radio Shack. It was fancy (for Radio Shack), being 1/10 scale and using rechargeable 7.2V battery packs and had the option of replacing the wheels if needed. When I was packing up prior to moving, I stuffed it all in a plastic tub and stored it away. Until now! Are the battery packs still any good? Maybe, but in case they aren't, I learned they use the Tamiya connectors. Which means I don't have to drive 150 miles to one of the last Radio Shacks for a replacement battery. Anyway the car still works! Not like I need another rabbit hole to fall down into.

That seems to be what happened. Now I got a Tamiya R/C monster truck. I opted for the kit, the kind where I have to cut the parts off the sprues and assemble everything, right down to the nuts and bolts and gears. And unlike the older Radio Shack and Nikko models I had as a kid, everything on the Tamiya can be replaced or upgraded in some form. I wanted one of these when I was younger and for good reason: It's a lot of fun. I'm already getting hop-up parts for it.

On my hobby workbench, I have some tool chests. One of them is at table level, so if I need to open the drawers, I have to make sure stuff is out of the way. Solution: Get a riser with an open bottom. But they're all expensive. Solution 2: Build something. But in researching metal and materials, I'd have a lot of cutting and drilling and tapping. Solution 3: Just use some 2x4 boards screwed together because the tool chests aren't all that heavy. Sometimes the best solution is the simplest.

Katsucon is this weekend. It looks like it'll be a mess, as usual. I'll figure something out.
