Apr. 3rd, 2024 06:08 amBefore long, I'll need to swap out the remaining 10TB drives in the server for some more 20TB drives. Then it'll have a total capacity of 80TB raw; 40TB usable, with room for another 4 hard drives. I could also upgrade the mobo/CPU which is a rabbit hole unto itself. The biggest cost on these is always the hard drives.
What makes having a server Worth The Hassle: It's like a big external hard drive that's instantly accessible from any computer in my house yet I don't have to physically connect my computer(s) to it. It just shows up as another drive, yet it's not subject to data corruption from Windows throwing a hissy fit or sketchy/damaged USB cables or enclosures. The hard drives are set up for redundancy so if one of them does crap out, it doesn't lose anything (as long as I replace the failed drive before another fizzles out). And as I'm finding out, I can pre-emptively replace hard drives with larger ones and TrueNAS automatically sees the larger drives. In that sense, it's been a fantastic success.
Delivered a new Windows 11 computer to my mom. The one I built for her in 2008 served well, but it can't be updated or upgraded anymore, and can't go beyond Windows 7. The problem with Windows 7 is, it's at the point where web browsers won't update for it anymore, and eventually websites will stop working with the older browsers. I'm starting to see it happen on my own computers.
Now I can't really call it a conversation, it was more like a few loosely-connected posts and comments, but there was some talk about how denpa music from 20 years ago sounds different than what's being made today. Despite not being able to pinpoint why, I have to agree with that. If I listen to some of the original Under17 songs from around 2003-4, that music hits different than something like the latest releases from Nanahira. For a more apples-to-apples comparison, I could compare what KOTOKO sang in 2002 vs her newest songs from within the last year, since she's been active the whole time. Maybe it's in how the music itself was produced? The instruments and equipment? Evolution of skills and talents? You know what, maybe it's just the memories attached to that music. Yes, plain old nostalgia.
I saw a post somewhere that said something along the lines of "if you're getting mixed signals from someone, do yourself a favor and take it as a no" and I really wish I had learned that much earlier than when I did.
