Ollie's Outlet amazes and fascinates me. A step or two below Big Lots, which makes Kmart look like Macy's or Nordstrom's. Most of the products scream out the dark results of sweatshop labor, shoddy refurb work, or both. There was one in Chambersburg that caught fire and burned to the ground; I hear that damages approached $100. But somehow I can't suppress the urge to go into one of those stores.

"Improve yourself, but to no one's call." Thought of this a few days ago.

Dude. My husband worked for Ollie's warehouse in Harrisburg for a while, and it was the filthiest, most disgusting place he'd ever seen. Ok, that doesn't say a lot. But I'll tell you, he'd come home and dig black dust out of his nostrils while complaining about the guy there who smelled like shit and was nicknamed "crackpipe" for obvious reasons. Ollie's sold "Whipper Snapple" that was almost a year out of date, keeping it in a hot warehouse when it should have been refrigerated. A container (the kind that is transported by sea and shipped on trains or tractor-trailers) was loaded with cheap toys and junk in China, and my pacifist, nature-loving husband found a spider halfway inside and stomped on it. "Who knows what kind of Chinese spider it was? It could have been dangerous, or a pregnant female that would cause mass competition with the local populations of spiders." Ollie's also kept a substantial stash of inventory in a warehouse that they told the tax auditor was empty.

Needless to say, we don't shop there anymore.

Feh, even if the auditor saw the junk, how much would that have been worth? A buck and change?

I think it was quite a bit of junk. Maybe $5.
