My LJ icons are becoming many, with another Osaka one. If you don't understand one bit of it, don't worry.

Here I am in the middle of my Christmas break, having accomplished only some of what I originally wanted to do. This was punctuated by a trip to a DirectBuy open house. For those of you unfamiliar with DirectBuy, it's a membership fee based service that allows the member to buy all sorts of things at wholesale prices. It sounds like a neat concept, right? Until you factor in that a membership can cost upwards of $4000. This is something they don't tell you until you're there at the open house. It's not to say that I didn't know about that beforehand, thanks to the wonder of the Internet. But I went to the open house anyway, because THEY called ME about coming in, and offered free gifts and a chance at 25 grand just for showing up. So I go in, and fill out on the questionaire about what sort of big-ticket items I'd be buying in the next several years. Only thing I circled was a DVD player, so when the salesman got around to me, he knew right away that I wasn't going to be a candidate. So they gave me my chance at the 25 grand (no luck there), my free gifts (meh), and I was out of there. And I was prepared to kick it Cromartie High style, too. It all reminded me of when I was little, and my parents would get invited to a time-share sales pitch under the premise of free gifts. One of them was a portable and inflatable sauna, which proved to be countless hours of fun. The whole day would be a grand outing indeed, adding to my young but growing taste for road trips.

So yeah. The free gifts I got today. One was a mini-vacation, which is 3 days/2 nights at a location from a list of participating places. Plus I gotta put up $50 when reserving it, which is refundable afterwards. Ok, I would eventually use this. Maybe not for a convention because none of the locations match up, but for the sake of getting away for a weekend? I'm cool with that. The other gift, is a ladies tennis bracelet! It's shiny! It's all dazzly! It's utterly useless to me. I genuinely have no need for any jewelry of any kind, much less so for women's jewelry. I was hoping I'd win the laptop computer instead, I would have been happy with just that. Oh well.

Since it was warmer than usual today (translated as: above freezing) I spent some time cleaning junk out of [livejournal.com profile] aichan95. A bag's worth of empty bottles and cans, and a box of stuff that was largely unnecessary for driving. I think she's going to need a new muffler soon, because the support bracket that was welded onto it has finally rusted off. Since the two cars I had previous to this needed mufflers at around 80k miles, getting 240k out of a stock muffler is impressive. Stainless steel wire should hold it at least until inspection time.

In the past couple days, Comic Market 67 happened. I didn't go, of course. But the latest Lia CD was sold there, featuring remixes of some of her songs. Thanks to the magic of BitTorrent, it reached my happy ears this afternoon. And if I knew where to buy the cd, I would have taken that route. Also found out that Lia now has her own site, and found out she's also done a couple songs for Initial D. Great, something else for me to look for. ::hits up Limewire and a bunch of music sites:: Now git up on yo feet and move! 13.6 farkin' MB, but it's good. Yeah? Yeah. Now if Lia and Eiko ever teamed up, that would kick ass all over.

It was an ok Christmas in terms of loot I suppose, I don't really expect much anymore. Got a $20 gift card to Best Buy which I promptly used to get the Eiken DVD, a $30 gift card for Circuit City, $20 cash, a body kit for a radio-control version of the RSX, and a carrying bag for said toy, new luggage set to replace the giant red suitcase my sister gave me to replace my worn-out suitcase, ah what else... That's pretty much it.

On the 24th, I stopped at a Macy's to look around because I had an odd urge to look at expensive stuff that I'll probably never buy in my lifetime. Unless it's electronics-related, then it's something I can set my sights on. A 72" TV isn't a pipe dream, it's a goal! But anyway. I only stuck around in Macy's for a few minutes before ending up in the Suncoast store nearby.

New Year's approaching soon! And with that, hopefully a better year and an anime news update to go with it! And some convention reports.

And maybe some pizza.

And a new DVD player, kinda like this one. I know it doesn't do DivX or Region 2, but the laptop can get around that.

And of course some buffalo wings.

And uh... what else? Oh yeah, more anime!

And... wait, don't go just yet, I almost remembered...

I love my Philips DVP-642. All Region + PAL + DivX = $70 at Target.

/no built-in DTS
//no overscan fixing
///meh, still a good deal.

The specs look good, the price looks good, but the idea of tossing 5 discs in at once and SA-CD capability is an enticing factor for me, hence the Sony. (There's also a 400 disc player, but that's overkill.)

On the other hand, getting both is a valid option too. The total cost of both combined still doesn't approach what I originally paid for my PS2 back in 2000.
